Arduino GSM Shield

You can use Arduino GSM Shield to connect your Arduino to the internet using the GPRS wireless network. Simply Connect this module to your Arduino board, put in a SIM card of  an operator offering GPRS coverage. You can make or receive voice calls by connecting  an external speaker and microphone circuit and also can send or receive SMS messages.

The communication between Arduino and GSM module is serial so we have to use serial pins of Arduino (Rx and Tx). The Tx pin of GSM module to Rx pin of Arduino and Rx pin of GSM module to Tx pin of Arduino. After that  connect the ground pin of arduino to ground pin of GSM module .Now its ready for use .


When the modem is in heavy use it draws a large current so it is recommended to use  external supply instead of powering the ARDUINO and GSM Module via USB cable as it is not capable of providing required curent .

The library used for communication between Arduino and the GSM shield is GSM library . The majority of functions are for managing data, voice, and SMS communication.

The shield contains the LEDs which shows the status

  • On: Shows the Shield gets power.
  • Status: Turns ON when the modem is powered and data is being transferred to/from the GSM/GPRS network.
  • Net: Blinks when the modem is communicating with the radio network.

The shield has an analog input channel and an analog output channel. The inputs can be used for both microphone and line inputs
